Frequently Asked Questions
I don't know how to play. Where do I start?
Come to the beginner's clinic Jan 22nd 10am, at the
Mira
Mesa Rec Center. We'll teach you everything you need to know to get started playing Ultimate!
You should also read Ultimate
in 10 Simple Rules. If you're really ambitious, you can read the
Official
Rules of Ultimate. And find a pickup game
-- play more than once a week!
What do I need to bring?
The most important thing is CLEATS. If you don't own any, get
yourself a pair of comfortable soccer cleats. Wear comfortable
shorts and your team jersey (T-shirt). Also, bring sunscreen and water.
And make sure you arrive before game-time
so you have time to warm up.
When and where are the games?
See the Schedule page for dates and
times. All games are at the
Mira
Mesa Rec Center. Each game will be at either 10:00 am or 11:30 am.
April 2nd is the all-day tournament and BBQ; each team will
play at least two play-off games that day.
How long do the games last?
Games typically end when one team scores 13 points, which can take 90
minutes or more. But since we have
time constraints, games may be capped at around 75 minutes.
What if it rains on game day?
If the fields are not closed, WE WILL PLAY IN THE RAIN. We
should know by Friday afternoon if the Rec Center will close the fields on Saturday,
so on Saturday morning check this website or contact your captains for the
latest status.
What team am I on?
Everyone will be assigned to a team by Jan. 24th. Soon thereafter, one of
your team captains will notify you as to which team you're on, and what time
your first game is on Sat. Jan. 29.
I forgot to name my "baggage" when I signed up. What now?
Send us an email; we'll take care of it, if we can. And don't forget to buy
all us hard-working league organizers a beer at Callahan's...
Who would I buy a beer for?
Alice, Dania, Nilla, Jef, Korin, Tom, Kurt ...
Speaking of beer, can I bring my own?
The Rec Center allows beer on the premises, but strongly discourages
glass. Or, you can just go to Callahan's after the game.
I missed the registration deadlines. Can I still play?
Sorry, the best we can do right now is put you on a wait-list; send us
an email. Also, DUDE Spring League 2005 is in the planning stages, so
be sure to check the
Spring League website in late-March.
Why Saturdays? Week-nights are better for me....
Lighted public fields large enough for Ultimate leagues are in high demand in San
Diego; there are many other sports leagues out there, all vying for field
space. We are working to become better established with the Rec
Centers, so that we can become a higher priority organization with them
for DUDE Winter and Spring Leagues.
How do you pick the teams?
We use a super-secret computer program written by NASA to evenly
balance the teams, based on information in your FBI file (and the
"skill" information you gave us when you registered). We can't tell you any more than
that, except that Tchebysheff polynomials and Kamtorus fractals are involved, and
we screen you with the Department of Homeland Security, as well as get
approval from the U.N.
What are Tchebysheff polynomials and Kamtorus fractals?
Sorry, time's up; gotta go. Thanks for stopping by.
Nothing to see down here anymore. Show's over.
What -- you still here? Whatever. Just don't click here.
